埃德加•希尔森拉特出生于德国莱比锡。1938年随母亲和弟弟逃往罗马尼亚，亲历了发生在罗马尼亚的大屠杀，曾先后在巴勒斯坦、法国生活过，50年代初定居美国，最后于1975年回到德国。他是最早借助于讽刺和荒诞不经的故事形容纳粹暴行的文学家之一，因此他的作品占有特殊地位。 2006年4月，为表彰希尔森拉特在文学创作中的杰出成就，在其诞辰80周岁之际，《没有明天的夜晚－埃德加•希尔森拉特传》纪录片在德国电视台公开放映。
